Imagine this: You sit down to start your day, open TallyPrime, and enter your login credentials—only to be met with an "Access Denied" message. You try again, slower this time, but the result is the same. Suddenly, a wave of panic sets in. Your entire business history is behind that login screen, and you are locked out.
While we all use our passwords daily, memory is fallible, and handovers aren't always perfect. In this article, we will explore the security types in TallyPrime and, more importantly, how to recover or "crack" the admin password if you are ever pushed into a corner.
Understanding Tally Security Control
Before we dive into the recovery process, let's look at the
two types of security offered in the latest version of TallyPrime:
1. Tally Vault Password (Data Encryption)
This is the "High Security" zone. It encrypts your
data completely.
- The
Effect: Your company name will not even appear in the "Select
Company" list; it will show up as a string of asterisks (e.g., ******).
- The
Risk: Forgetting a Tally Vault password is fatal. There is no way
to recover or crack it. Any attempt to bypass this layer usually results
in the automatic deletion of all transaction data within the file.
2. Control User Access (Admin Login)
This is the standard administrator control used to manage
different sub-users.
- The
Effect: It requires a Username and Password to access the data.
- The
Benefit: If a sub-user forgets their password, the Admin can reset it.
- The
Crisis: If the Admin forgets the password, the data becomes
functionally "locked" for administrative tasks, even if
sub-users can still log in. In this scenario, a manual recovery/crack is
mandatory.
The Step-by-Step Recovery Process (Admin Control Only)
[!IMPORTANT] This process works only for Admin Access
Control, not for Tally Vault.
Step 1: The Pre-Requisites
Before touching any files:
- Take
a Backup: Copy your data folder to a safe location. Never perform
these steps on your only copy.
- Note
the Details: Identify the Folder Number (e.g., 10010) and the Financial
Year beginning date.
- Sync
Features: If you have sub-user access, log in and note down the F11
Features (GST settings, Cost Centers, etc.).
- Close
Network: Ensure all other users on the network have closed Tally.
Step 2: Create a "Mirror" Company
- Create
a new company in Tally with a temporary name like "Recovery
Company."
- CRITICAL:
Set the Financial Year Beginning From date to match your locked
company exactly (e.g., April 1, 2023).
- Enable
the same F11 features you noted in Step 1.
Step 3: Recording Demo Transactions
In your new "Mirror" company, record a simple Cash
Expense of ₹1 on the last day of every financial year covered in your
data.
- Example:
If your data spans 2023 to 2026, record a ₹1 entry on March 31, 2024;
March 31, 2025; and March 31, 2026.
Step 4: The File Replacement (The "Crack")
- Navigate
to your Tally Data folder on your computer.
- Open
the Mirror Company folder and copy the file named Company.1800 (or Company.900
for Tally.ERP9).
- Now,
open the Main (Locked) Company folder.
- Paste
the file here. When prompted, choose "Replace/Overwrite existing
file."
Step 5: The Rewrite Command
- Open
Tally and highlight your main company.
- Press
Ctrl + Alt + R on your keyboard to trigger the Rewrite/Repair
process.
- Select
your company and accept the prompt to repair. Wait for the process to
finish.
Step 6: Final Configuration
Once the repair is complete, open the company. You will find
that Tally bypasses the login screen entirely. Your data is back!
- Update
Details: Re-verify the company name, address, and contact info in the
"Alter" screen.
- New
Security: Immediately set up a new Admin Username and Password.
- Cleanup:
You can now delete the "Mirror" company folder.
Final Thoughts & Summary
- Tally
Vault is Permanent: If you lose a Vault password, the data is gone.
Always keep it noted securely.
- Admin
Loss is Recoverable: By using the "Header Replacement"
method described above, you can save your career and your data.
- Pro-Tip:
If you have a Vault password but forgot the Admin login, follow the same
steps, but ensure the "Mirror" company is created with the exact
same Vault password.
